British travel blog names historic Ribe the best small travel destination of 2014
Denmark’s oldest town is also the most beautiful in Europe, according to an online poll by British travel blog Global Grasshopper and Hotel.info.
Among 52 historic small towns, the voters found Ribe in south-western Jutland to be Europe’s best small destination of 2014.
“Ribe is a beautiful authentic slice of Danish life,” Global Grasshopper wrote on its website.
“Wander the old town, meandering through narrow cobblestone streets lined with crooked half-timbered houses, or explore the ancient cathedral, before climbing the Commoner’s Tower to gaze over the rooftops.”
The head of tourism at Esbjerg Council, Henrik Vej Kastrupsen hopes the award will help to promote Ribe outside of Denmark.
“It’s fantastic for Ribe. It means that Ribe will now be promoted in Germany, Italy, France, Holland and Spain,” Kastrupsen told JydskeVestkysten newspaper.
Ribe narrowly beat coastal town Óbidos in Portugal by 3,965 votes to 3,734.
